How long have you been training at JCMA?

1 year and 3 months

Describe what has led you to JCMA?

I really liked how GM Jesse and Sensei Sylvia included me as part of the group since my first class. Before JCMA, I went to other schools to try out, but JCMA was the first school where right away I really felt like I was welcomed and part of the group, the JCMA “Ohana.” I was so happy that they knew my name the first time around and I didn’t have to keep reminding them what it was. 🙂

What do you enjoy most about being a part of JCMA?

I really like having the opportunity to learn about working with different weapons and incorporating it to my katas.

What else do you do when your not training at JCMA?

I go to Kumon classes, sing in the Campanelli Children’s Choir, learning how to cook, swim, read books/comic books with my daddy & baby brother, Cameron, go shopping with my my mom, draw especially manga characters and just spend time with my family and friends.

I’m most proud of my first place trophy during my first ever Karate Tournament.

Dynamite by Taio Cruz

If you were a star of a martial arts movie, what would be your signature move?

Blade kick to the face!

If you had a super power, what would it be and why?
Invisibility because I can sneak up behind people who are doing bad things and beat them up or at least have them face their crimes and bring them to justice
Who is your favorite comic book character and why?

KFS_MAY_15

Let’s spend a little time and get to know him better!

Name: Brandon Christopher Irvin Jacon Williams. But I usually just use Brandon Christopher Williams

Hometown: Vallejo

Age: 25 (26 on May 22nd of this year)

How long have you been training with JCMA:
I, personally, have been training with JCMA for about fourteen or fifteen months….. So, a little bit over a year now.

Describe what has led you to JCMA
Well, my son was actually the first one to start. I was bringing him to classes and I would stay throughout the class to watch. After a while I wanted to see if I could push myself a bit and try to start doing the exercises. I figured that I would try a few classes and then see that it was to much for me, but I was wrong. After the first few classes, I felt great! I was sore, yes, but I loved  it! And plus…. since I was a young child I have been very interested in martial arts. I was always good at kicking and I was a very fast puncher. So I think that had something to do with the reason I came to JCMA as well. I felt like I ws going to be able to do a childhood dream. The fact that it is a great work out and I am losing weight and getting stronger is a HUGE benefit and reason as well.

What do you enjoy most about being a part of JCMA:
What ISN’T there to enjoy? But if I have to actually point out some things, and without making it a page full. One thing about it is the physical workout that I get. After my stroke, I left the hospital in a wheel chair… They didn’t know if I would be able to walk. I stayed in the wheel chair for a bit until I was using a walker. They, the doctors, said that was how I would have to walk. But then I did more physical therapy until I was able to use a cane. Well at that point I came to a halt. I was doing as much with the physical therapy as I could but I wasn’t getting any better. At that point I started gaining a lot of weight. At one point I was even up to nearly 300 lbs!! Well anyways, after I started doing Kaju, I saw a HUGE change! I enjoy working out and pushing myself. It not only betters me physically but mentally as well. Another thing that I enjoy about JCMA is the people. Everyone from Grand Master Corpus to the young kids getting their white belts, they are all very friendly and positive people. I never get the feeling that anyone is looking at me like I don’t belong there because of my disabilities, and I cant thank everyone enough for that. I also think its great because there are a lot of other young kids there as well that my son can interact with. They can grow up with and become friends. He doesn’t have any siblings from me so its great to know that he will have people his age that will have his back. Those are probably the top reasons that I enjoy being a part of JCMA although there are many more!

What else do you do when you’re not training:
When I am not training at class I am usually at home relaxing. I love to play the guitar so I am teaching myself how to. I am also learning how to speak Spanish as well. I even go over the different forms that I know…. Especially when it’s a nice dayoutside. I’ll get into some shorts and go out and enjoy the weather. And of course the one thing that I do EVERYDAY and ALL THE TIME is raising my son. They aren’t kidding when they say that parenting is one of the hardest jobs there is…. But at the same time, it is one of the most rewarding jobs as well. I try to teach my son in a way so that he will grow up and be someone that people want to be like. (and girls want to be with) I am a single father so it is sometimes difficult. But with the help from my family, I am able to manage. Being a part of JCMA along with my son is helping in that regard as well because the way the classes are taught is helping me teach him respect and discipline.

What are you the most proud of:
Well…. I would have to say that I am most proud of stepping up and being a father to my son. But If it’s about Kaju…. Then I would have to say that I am most proud of taking the first step and giving it a shot. When I started I was very overweight, my body was weak and I didn’t have much confidence in myself. So, I think for me to actually say that I wanted see if I could do this is a huge thing! A lot of people in my situation I think would, and do, just let the depression swallow them whole and don’t take any chances because they are scared of failing… But on the same note, I am proud that I was able to stick with it and not give up. So, I am proud of deciding to try it out and for sticking with it and becoming part of the JCMA ohana.

If you had to do a solo demonstration, what would be your theme song:
Wow! Umm….. I honestly have quite a few that I would love to use… But, for sake of this not being a whole book series about myself, I’ll list a few….
  1.    Nunun Wheh (Why You) by Chuli and Miae- This is a song that was on the movie 3 Ninjas Kick Back. It was a part of the movie where they were in Tokyo at a “Ninja” tournament and this song was playing…. Many of days I took off the stick part of the broom and went outside spinning it around with this song playing in my head as a young boy. Yes, this song would be great!
  2.     “Techno Remix” to a song called Simple And Clean by Utada Hikaru from a video game I play. I’ve never seen or heard of it used in a martial arts demonstration before, althought I’m sure it has, but I think it would be a great mix.
  3.     Die Another Day by Madonna from the James Bond movie by the same title. Again, I’ve never seen a martial arts demonstration done to this song but I think it would be awesome!
Now, out of these three songs, which one would I like to use more?  Honestly have no idea… I guess I would have to try each one out and see which one fits better. It also would depend on what the demonstration would be about.
If you had a super power, what would you leave and why?

This is a very hard question because there a few one that I would love to have. But for me and my situation now, it would have to be the ability to fly. My reason is that since I have a walking and seeing disability and I can’t get around for myself with a car. If I could fly, I could go where ever I would want and not need to worry about running into anything or anyone.

Who is your favorite comic book character and why?

Batman! I like Batman because although he has no actual super powers, he can go head to head with even Superman. He uses his smarts, skills and technology to fight crime. I also like the fact that he is great at hand to hand combat as well as being able to use a bunch of different weapons. Plus his costume looks SUPER cool!

If you were a star of a martial arts movie, what would be your signature move?

Left jab, right jab, left straight punch followed by stepping back and side kick to the head! Oh yeah!

What is your favorite Boba or Tapioca drink?

I’ve never had either…. By  I hope to try it now!

So that’s it. I know this wasnt part of the questions, but I just want to say thank you to everyone who is a part of JCMA and all of the JCMA affiliates who make my Kaju journey so amazing. I also want to say a special thank you to Grand Master who has helped me so much and has over and over told me that he knew I could do it. I am deeply honored to be training under him and to be part of his ohana. ALOHA !!!!!
